Encoreship (TM) Program Overview

“This was a good detailed hands-on experience that
gave me an opportunity to learn about a new career option
in an industry I hadn’t been in before!”

WHAT IS AN ENCORESHIP™?

The Encoreship™ Program is a proprietary process for helping Encore NEO members test the potential for new career options while also helping carefully selected host organizations increase their employee candidate pool and assess the fit of individuals for a wide range of positions within their organizations.

The program is specifically for Encore NEO members and those Host Organizations who are invited to participate based on their ability to meet the criteria of high-quality organizations that are in alignment with the goals of Encore NEO: privately-owned; locally-based; high-growth; age 50+ friendly; with a culture that has an innovative spirit and strong, human-based values.

The Encoreship™ process itself is based in the use of the Business Model Generation Canvas to foster creativity and innovation as candidates and prospective employers explore the possibilities for mutual value creation.

The exorbitant costs of poor hiring decisions should be unacceptable. Yet according to a 2017 CareerBuilder Survey, 74% of employers say they have hired the wrong person for a position.
(Northwestern University Human Resources, The Cost of a Bad Hire, 2021)

Costs of Poor Hiring Decisions to Employers:

The U.S. Department of Labor’s estimate is the average cost of a bad hiring decision is at least 30 percent of the individual’s first-year expected earnings.
In addition to the clear financial costs, there is also:

Time spent on recruiting. The sooner you get it right, the less time you have to spend recruiting candidates. When you invest the time and get it wrong – well, that’s time you’ll never get back.

Time and talent spent on onboarding & training. Getting a new employee up to speed is a huge investment of time, energy, and attention on everyone’s part – all to no avail if you’ve made the wrong selection.

Time spent on managing poor performance. When new employees fall short of expectations, managers have the unwelcomed task of documenting shortcomings and conducting hard conversations. All of this take time and focus away from more productive efforts.

Impact on morale. Introducing a new member to the team always creates some level of disruption. If the new person is the wrong person, team morale suffers.

Costs to Job-seekers of Accepting the Wrong Job:

Candidates who end up in the wrong positions pay a hefty price in:

The inability to fulfill the jobs responsibilities. When we can’t do the job that’s expected of us, we can come out looking bad and feeling like a failure. Our professional reputation can also take a big hit.

Disruption of job history. Ultimately, if it doesn’t work out, we get let go. Now, we have to be able to explain a brief period of employment on your resume and make sense of it to the next potential employer.

Stress on emotional health and relationships. The job search process is an emotional roller coaster. Getting a job can build hope and resolve a lot of fears for ourselves, for our new employer, and for our loved ones. When it doesn’t work out, it is an emotional crash for everyone.

Opportunity costs. We have limited time, energy, and attention to invest in our careers. When that investment ends up getting us into the wrong job, then we’ve lost forever the time we could have spent getting closer to the right job.

The Encore NEO Encoreship™ Program is a powerful tool for both employers and candidates to maximize the odds of making good hiring decisions and avoiding the costs of getting it wrong.

Benefits of Encoreship™ Programs to Employers:

In terms of both today's workload and tomorrow's workforce, starting an internship program is an excellent way to facilitate success at your company. Following are just some of the benefits you can expect to receive as an Encoreship™ host.

Find Future Employees

Reduce the drain on company resources from recruiting and hiring by cultivating a pool of star Encore interns to fill your positions as they open up.

Test-drive the talent.

Sometimes a new employee makes a solid impression in the interview, but simply doesn't gel with your current team or the way your company operates. Engaging someone as an Encore intern is the most effective way to evaluate his or her potential as a full-time employee. When you "try out" candidates, you make fewer mistakes when it comes to full-time staffing.

Increase productivity.

An experienced Encore intern can make real contributions to productivity now, helping your full-time staff avoid becoming overburdened by side projects, and freeing them up to accomplish more creative tasks or tasks that require high-level expertise.

Enhance perspective.

Encore interns bring more to the table than just an extra set of hands. Especially in today’s modular teams of 5 to 15 employees, Encores bring years of experience, specialized skill sets and novel perspectives that can break up the status quo. Include Encore interns in brainstorming sessions to maximize this benefit.

Benefits of Encoreship™ Programs to Encore Interns:

Finding a job after the age of 50 can be a challenge, especially if you want to explore possibilities in new industries. Unfortunately, you need to obtain a job before you can gain experience. Internships are a great way for Encores to test new careers and obtain valuable work experience. Following are just some of the benefits you can expect to receive as an Encoreship™ intern.

Explore a new career path

Exploring is an important part of the Encore Career adventure, and internships are a great way to test new fields of potential interest. Encores who have interned are also more likely to feel confident they chose the right career path.

Transition into a job

Carefully selected host companies use Encoreships as a way to enhance their recruitment efforts. While not guaranteed, a company may decide to hire the Encore intern at the end of the assignment. Even if a job offer doesn’t happen right away, an intern who makes a favorable impression could receive an offer down the line when an opening occurs. It’s a way for companies to test out an employee before committing to hiring them.

Receive financial compensation

Encoreships™ are paid which means you can gain valuable work experience and make money at the same time. Pay rates are benchmarked against market rates and compensation is managed by a third-party staffing organization so you can be confident in being fairly rewarded for your efforts.

Develop and refine skills

You can learn a lot about your strengths and weaknesses during an Encoreship™. Encoreships™ have a built-in process for feedback from supervisors and career coaches who are established in the field. This offers a unique learning opportunity that you may not have again as a working adult.
