Encoreship™ Program Overview

Encore NEO  Encoreship™ Program Overview

The Encore NEO Encoreship™ Program culminates in a 90-day paid internship program that allows highly motivated people age 50+ to test new career options while helping a select group of premier, age-friendly host employers increase their employee candidate pool and assess the fit of candidates for a range of positions.

Encoreship Participants are Encore NEO members age 50+ who are transitioning to a new job or career.

Encoreship Host Employers are invited to participate and are screened to meet high-quality criteria. They are privately-owned, locally-based, high-growth, age 50+ friendly, foster an innovative spirit, and possess strong human-based values.

The Encoreship process begins with Participants working with a career coach to develop a Business Model Canvas that clarifies interests, skills, and the value Participants can bring to a desired business. Participants are then matched with Encoreship Host Employers. During the 90-day paid Encoreship experience, Participants test their new career options while Host Employers test-drive potential employees. Encore NEO conducts Process Check-ins with Encoreship Participants and Host Employers weekly.

Benefits for Encoreship Participants include:

  • Testing New Career Options
Exploring new options is an important part of the Encore career adventure. Encoreship internships allow Participants to test new fields of interest and assess if those fields are right for them.

  • Developing and Refining Skills
Encoreship Participants learn and develop new skills while obtaining valuable and hard to acquire work experience. Participants also receive regular feedback in sessions with supervisors and career coaches that assess their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Receiving Financial Compensation
Compensation, which is managed by a third-party staffing organization, is benchmarked against market rates.

  • Transitioning into a Job
While not guaranteed, an Encoreship Host Employer may hire the Encoreship Participant following the 90-day internship.

  • Minimizing the Costs of Accepting the Wrong Job
Test-driving a new job or career can minimize the following:

    • Sense of frustration and/or failure resulting from the inability to fulfill the job responsibilities.
    • Gaps in employment history.
    • Stress on emotional health and relationships.
    • Opportunity costs – time spent in the wrong job is time lost forever in the right job.

Benefits to Encoreship Host Employers include:

  • Minimizing the Costs of Poor Hiring Decisions
According to a 2017 CareerBuilder Survey, 74% of employers say they have hired the wrong person for a position. (Northwestern University Human Resources, The Cost of a Bad Hire, 2021). The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the average cost of a bad hiring decision is at least 30 percent of the individual’s expected first-year earnings.

Poor hiring decisions also negatively affect:

o Time spent on recruiting.
o Time and talent spent on onboarding & training.
o Time spent on managing poor performance.
o Team morale.

  • Test-Driving Talent
Host Employers may evaluate Participants’ potential as full-time employees and ensure that they will gel with how the company operates and with current employees.

  • Increasing Productivity
Experienced Encoreship Participants can help full-time staff with side projects and free them up to focus on tasks that require higher-level expertise.

  • Enhancing Perspective
Encoreship Participants bring more to the table than just an extra set of hands. They bring years of experience, specialized skill sets, and novel perspectives that can improve the status quo.

  • Developing a Pipeline for Future Employees
Host Employers can cultivate a pool of Encoreship participants to fill positions as they become available.
